Easter Jeepn on the west coast.
Day 1: The journey began in Blenheim, with the convoy setting course for Westport. The first stop was at the Iron Bridge to Denniston Track. The route provided stunning views, and a sense of adventure, leading to the historic Denniston coal mining area. The highlight of the track was reasonably deep river crossing, adding an element of excitement to the start of the trip.
Day 2: The second day was dedicated to the Tailings Track & Loop, known for its demanding terrain. The day began with a steep descent to the river, followed by a challenging climb that required winching. Williams' Jeep encountered overheating issues, requiring several stops to cool the engine. A temporary fix involving Glen's portable water pump to clean the radiator proved insufficient, as the radiator ultimately failed, bursting into steam & cracking in multiple places later up the track.
Day 3: The team took on rock crawling at Mt Fredric & Mt Rochford Denniston. This involved a steep climb up the rocks, rewarding the team with scenic views and waterfalls. After the Jeep action, the convoy made its way to Hokitika, enjoying the change of scenery and preparing for the next phase of the adventure.
Day 4: The team started late, dedicating the morning to vehicle repairs. Warren secured a radiator from the North Island, rushing to collect it in Greymouth that morning, while William and Tony worked on removing the damaged remains of his radiator. The afternoon brought the challenges of Mt Greenland, starting with overgrown vegetation and small slips. The convoy had to navigate carefully, testing their skills. The route then led to a big mud bog with multiple tracks. The first mud bog was followed by another deep, watery bog, which required carefully lining up the tracks and booting it to get to the other side. After the bogs, the team climbed a hill, where Don's Jeep slipped on the rocks, ending up in an awkward position. Once recovered, Don's Jeep was found to have spun the rear tube axles on his diff, meaning it would be a long journey back in 2WD. The group eventually turned around, defeated by the mountain, and made there way back to the bottom. Once down we made a stop at a local bar in Ross.
Day 5: The final day included a drive from Hokitika to Reefton, with a stop to visit an old friend of Don's who had some cool toys. The journey to Petrol Hill was scenic, surrounded by greenery, leading to a steep rock face that required everyone to winch up. The trip concluded with a well-deserved meal and drinks at the local pub, celebrating the challenges overcome and the memories made.
